It would be great to learn a bit more about each of you! Which area of manufacturing are you working in at the moment? What predictions do you have for the manufacturing industry over the next 5 years?

    Hi all,

Simon here time served machinist within the medical device industry originally, however now I work mainly within the nuclear sector from my own Ltd company. Although my career has taken me more towards the design and consultancy side of engineering I still have an active interest in manufacturing especially in the UK! There are some terrific companies doing some extrodianry things and we need to be proud of, nurture and build on the manufacturing successes of these companies so that once again manufacture in the UK is world leading. Due to the industries I work in I am aware of the pain caused with some of the requirements placed on manufacturers and would like to explore how commonplace some of the requirements are within the sector, how the manufacturing sector adapts to these requirements and the possibilities of more up front supplier engagement.

I am interested in learing more about new processes and technologies, tooling developments, CAM anything that can drive a good discussion.

    Kind Regards

    Simon

    Hi all

I'm Stephen Grimes currently working as technician producing unique void free composite products for the energy industry.

I'm also a newby to the IET, having just joined as EngTech TMIET I have worked within composites in an R&D facility producing many prototype products and historic products since 2007, I have attended EIA meeting and had the facility I work represented in one.Prior to that I worked within filament winding for 1.1/2 years.

I'm looking to expand knowledge further within composites and engineering in general. And am interested in learning new techniques.

Composite industry is growing everywhere yet the unique process I do looks to be going early 2019.

    Regards

    Steve.

  • Hello All,

I know as a committee we've been pretty quiet on here to date.

But we're moving this up a gear starting with our blog " Which Way Next?"  https://communities.theiet.org/groups/blogpost/view/59/272/6896

Please click through to find out more.

With more blogs to follow - we'd love to hear from you.

  • I joined the IET (IEE) in 1987 and have worked mainly in machine control system design and manufacture. I'm now a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham researching Process Management in the NHS. In case your wondering - there's not a lot of Process Management done in the NHS. I first got involved with Quality Management in the days fo BS5750 (now ISO9001) and the requirement for Process Management as applied to design and manufacture including software design and test. My interests now are the design and implementation of good Process Management Systems that meet the requirements of ISO9001 and TickIT. I'm a DW paddler.
  • Fred Eastham - IET Lancs and Cumbria LN Chairman

First of all very nice to meet you all, I hope you and families are safe and well.

I stared work at BAE SYSTEMS in 1991 working and training as an aircraft maintenance technician during which time studied part-time and completed an Engineering Degree, after which was appointed a junior Engineer position with the Flight Test Instrumentation (F.T.I.) department at Warton aerodrome (Nr Blackpool) in 2000.

My current role is a Lead support Engineer and one of the SMEs for ground & airborne Telemetry still at BAE SYSTEMS which is a prime contractor for the MOD and have many years of experience dealing with the costumer on many levels. Prior to this role I managed an Engineering Laboratory manufacturing and developing prototypes and small batch manufacture for both local and export customers.

I joined the Institute of Electrical Engineers in June 2000 along with the STEM-NET ambassador’s scheme, and helped as out as IEE YM event organiser with John Flavin, Eric Sarti and Andy Marland.
I have been and still am an active STEM ambassador, helping out at BAE SYSTEMS events, IET careers and science events such as the Lancashire Science Festival at UClan . For many years now I have been the one of the department’s POC for apprentices and graduates organising work experience, training and development plans.

I have recently been a guest speaker at the Manchester Telemetry TPN and
Colloquium on Antennas, Wireless and Electromagnetics (CAWE) events of which I enjoyed meeting interesting professionals of which were all  very welcoming as a new addition into the IET Technical Network communities. If you have a chance of being a guest speaker and presenting a paper, have a go, as it's a great feeling to share your knowledge and meet new colleagues and friends.

All the very best and stay safe and well,

    Fred
