Harry Smith who presented his topic 'How to paint houses in your sleep' based on his entrepreneurial work inventing a small robotic device that can assist with painting high walls in situations where doing so would be risky or complex to do so manually. The audience were captivated by this exciting idea that autonomous systems could make such a difference to household maintenance while also other exciting robotic ideas were shown that were inspired by this work such as a toilet that can automatically clean itself.

Present Around the World is a global competition for young professionals and students within engineering to:


•   Develop and showcase their presentation skills


•   Present to a global audience


•   Win cash prizes, and travel to the global final


•   Increase their profile and open doors for your career


Entrants do not have to be a member of the IET to enter but must be between 18 - 30 years old. They will be required to deliver a 10-minute presentation on any engineering or technology topic.


This is an international competition with several local, national, regional and international heats to find the best young presenter around the world. Entrants can enter the Surrey heat and potentially win a cash prize for a high quality ten minute technical presentation on any topic that beats the other competitors. The winner of this heat will progress to the next heat level.


IET Surrey heats will be held on Wednesday 17th May 2017 at 6pm, at the University of Surrey. This will be in the main lecture theatre in the Business School of Management (Rik Medlik Building) and will take place immediately before our main lecture "All change: The upgrade of London Waterloo".
