Technical visit to ABB Malaysia was held on the 1st Oct 2015 (Thursday) and attended by 5 IET members and 6 non-members. This visit was organised by the IET C&A TPN and IET Malaysia Network. All participants arrived at ABB Malaysia Office before 9.30 am and the visit started with the safety briefing and introduction about ABB Malaysia at their meeting room. During the presentation, participants were introduced to ABB operation and business portfolio in Malaysia and were told that the first ABB power generator was installed in Malaysia dated back in 1904 by MFO Oerlikon.

After the presentation, Mr. Richard Yeoh, Senior Manager of ABB Malaysia led the team to visit their Low Voltage Motor Control Centre (MCC) fabrication plant which was just behind their office. At the fabrication plant, Richard explained the method their various types of MCC were fabricated, of which most of the motor starter were withdrawable type and mainly used for oil & gas applications. The MCC fabrication started with the panel design process, followed by panel structure construction, components selection, starter wiring and finally finished with testing process which complied to IEC61439 requirement.

Next stop to the LV MCC fabrication plant was the MV Switchgear fabrication. Their Medium Voltage (MV) Switchgear Panel were varied in a range from 11kV to 33kV. Their switchgears were installed at many local substations as well exported to Asia Pacific Region. Similar to LV MCC fabrication, the MV switchgear was begun with control section wiring, followed by panel structure fabrication and busbar installation. Each switchgear ended with final testing before shipping out to customer.

After the factory tour, all participants were led to visit ABB show room. The show room have a few show cases including ABB 800xA DCS, Low Voltage Switchgear, Medium Voltage Switchgear, LV components and robotic.

At the robotic showcase, ABB staff demonstrated the robotic operation by programing the robot arm to pick-up boxes from a pellet and move them to a conveyor with a desired orientation. The conveyor was controlled by ABB AC-500 PLC and AC drive where the conveyor speed can be adjusted.

Besides than the standard industrial robot, they also showed their newly launched Dual-arm Robot – YuMi. Mr. Choong, Regional Manager of Robotic Division explained and demonstrated the operation of YuMi robot. YuMi was uniquely designed to replicate human attributes, innovation that provides complete solution for the automation of small parts assembly particularly in the electronics industry.

The visit ended with question and answer session. Ir. Chang represented IET Control and Automation (C&A) TPN and IET Malaysia Local Network presented the token of appreciate to Mr. Lai of ABB and followed by networking and lunch sponsored by ABB. All participants were having good time networking with ABB staffs as well as gaining new knowledge in the latest technology development in the area of E&E and Automation industrial.
