The Railway Network YP Group organised a visit to the new Crossrail station at Canary Wharf on the 20 September. We arrived to the Crossrail headquarters in the heart of Canary Wharf and met the rest of the group – a chatty bunch of about 20 early-mid career professionals, from a range of career backgrounds and industries.

The visit started with a presentation from Terry Morgan (Chairman, Crossrail). The presentation included an introduction to the background of Crossrail and some of the company’s initiatives. The particular highlight was understanding how Crossrail have developed and influenced skills development and the growth of apprentices across the whole industry.

After the presentation, the group got kitted-up in orange Crossrail-branded PPE (there was no way we were getting lost…) and headed over to the worksite. After numerous sign-ins and a safety induction, we were finally allowed down into the station. The scale of the work was immense. Looking down the length of the platform gave real insight into the capacity of the new trains and the benefit the new service will bring to London.

The station itself reflected the architecture of Canary Wharf (brushed metal, cavernous, business-like) and, even though work was still in progress, you got a sense of the flow and design of the space. The highlight was being allowed to look up a vent shaft (we were mostly engineers, after all).

The Railway Network YP Group would like to say another thanks to Crossrail Ltd, and Adam Usher, for helping us organise the visit!  We’d also encourage you to keep a look out for future technical visits and events organised for our Young Professionals.
