University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)'s brand new engineering building in Preston opens today, Friday 18 October. Featured in the opening will be the prototype SMA jacket designed by a secondary pupil from Burnley whose cousin has Skeletal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The jacket is now a finalist in the Primary Engineer and Secondary Engineer Leaders Award for 2019, which are supported by IMechE.

Dr Matt Dickinson from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) built the prototype which has generated further research in the form of peer reviewed papers and a PhD. Rapid prototyping firm 3D GBIRE have offered support to the project and 3D printing is expected to play a major role in maintaining the concept and adapting it to the patient over time. There is now hope that this will have a significant impact on the way the illness will be treated worldwide.

This amateur video of the prototype unveiling at the awards ceremony in July gives a great sense of the idea and the excitement and continued development it is generating. http://ow.ly/XLHg50wNSZn. hashtag#primaryengineer hashtag#secondaryengineer http://ow.ly/IGnR50wNT5U
