They certainly were at Anglesey Circuit on 13 August.  Its one of my favourite circuits, a great location with the sea right up by the circuit and the views of the Snowdonia mountain range in the background and looking towards South Stack from another viewpoint as well. You get a good crowd of riders and spectators and the race officials at NG Racing who run the races are always friendly.  Plus the weather was good, relatively warm, but not too bright and sunny for the riders.

It was the first round of the 2017 MotoE Racing championship, an innovative race series for electric motorcycles, which the IET’s Automotive & Road Transport Systems Technical Professional Network support, as its aimed at university teams, plus all the Technical Commission are IET members. Normally there are around 5-8 bikes lined up on the grid, but due to various technical and logistical reasons, we started out with two teams at Anglesey i.e. University  of Bath Zero team  and the Nova Race team from Delft University of Technology and the Universities of Applied Science.  This however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Rupal Patel the race promoter was able to obtain permission from NG Racing, for the bikes to race in the Desmo races with the petrol bikes.  What a treat that was for the riders, teams and spectators.  Now we’d get to see what the electric bikes were really made of and they didn’t disappoint.  Both bikes and riders acquitted themselves well and managed to mix it up with the petrol bikes being in the middle of the field for most of the two races.

Congratulations to both teams, a great start to the season and there should be more bikes on the grid for the next round at Pembrey, South Wales and Donnington after that.

Don’t forget to watch a video we shot at MotoE at Silverstone that explains more about why Electric bikes are better than Petrol bikes.

The Nova team have kindly shared their onboard footage with us from Anglesey, so you can view the track from the rider's perspective.

If you’d like to come along and watch the races at  Donnington on 7-8 October 2017, first five people to contact her for each of the race series at Rupal Patel  will get a free ticket to the races and also a behind the scenes tour of the garages, get to meet the teams and see the bikes.  Don’t miss this opportunity for an excellent insight into MotoE racing.
