Final speaker announcement - Jonathan Speed!Bio:

Jonathan Speed is a Design and Development Engineer within the Accelerator Design division at ISIS neutron and muon source. Currently, the main projects he is working on include the procurement of new dipole coils for the ISIS main bending magnets, design of a new RF ion source and the production of a new busbar system for the injection kicker magnets. Prior to working at ISIS, he worked as an electromechanical engineer in the Normal Conducting Magnets section at CERN.

Synopsis:

After decades of reliable operation, over the last 15 years, the mica-glass fibre insulated coils for the ISIS main dipoles have begun to fail. The ISIS accelerator accelerates bunches of protons to 800 MeV 50 times per second. This high frequency leads to high voltages and many challenges. The programme of replacing these coils has taken us on a circular journey of development, through glass fibre insulation, and made clear huge benefit of mica insulation for high frequency, high voltage accelerator magnets. This talk will give a snapshot of that journey.
