As promised, here is another speaker update for our event in September

Philip Wise from ISIS – STFC will present on Design and manufacture of a 20MeV accelerating cavity for ISIS

Abstract:

This presentation will show the design stages along with manufacturing processes and techniques employed to reproduce a Tank IV for the ISIS linac.

Several aspects will be covered, including, the sectional resonant vessel, its physical shape with inclusion of removable access ports, material choices, drift tubes, attachment and alignment of peripheral components, vacuum and electrical seals. Some test results will be given - these highlight the wider infrastructure necessary to enable full power proving along with several jigs and fixtures designed and built to facilitate such testing.

Bio:

Philip is a Mechanical Engineer working within the ISIS Spallation Neutron Source Design Division. His current project is to replace the ageing Tank IV on the ISIS linear Accelerator. This project has been under way since 2011 and has overcome many design challenges, some of which have been: Finding and building a suitable test area, design and manufacture 4616 and TH116 Amplifier circuits, design, build and manufacture of the resonant tank and drift tubes, plus assorted components to enable RF power into the Test Tank. The project is aproaching completion of the manufacture phase for the 12m full size tank IV. Assembly and testing will happen over the next 12- 18 months with installation on ISIS during the proposed 2020 shut down.
