Motor Design Ltd (MDL) is proud to announce the official launch of the SEMPEED Consortium (Simulation of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Electrical Drives) which is for academic collaborators and industrial members. The consortium is inspired by the legacy of the former SPEED Consortium, to which Dr David Staton and Dr Mircea Popescu of MDL were key contributors for many years. SEMPEED aims to further the science of electric machine design, software, research and training.

A first academic site is now operational at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI under the coordination of Professor Nabeel A. O. Demerdash, whose pioneering work on finite element analysis of electrical machines and design of brushless PM motors and drives has been recognized at the IEEE highest level with the Nikola Tesla Award. More recently, work at Marquette includes automated design optimization of electrical machines, and condition monitoring of electric motors and power electronics drives.

We are also working to develop another SEMPEED site. Our long-time friend, collaborator, and SPEED colleague, Dr. Dan M. Ionel, who held until very recently a dual appointment as Research Professor at Marquette University and Chief Engineer for Regal Beloit Corp., has now relocated to be a full time Professor and the L. Stanley Pigman Chair in Power at University of Kentucky (UoK) in Lexington, KY. We are actively working with Dan Ionel to establish a collaborative SEMPEED site at UoK, which enjoys a long outstanding tradition in electric machines and drives.

The list of inaugural industrial members of SEMPEED includes, in alphabetical order: Grundfos, Kollmorgen, MTS, and Regal Beloit. Membership benefits include access to the Motor-CAD software on annual basis, research and training. A first group meeting and two-day training course was held in May 2015 in Milwaukee to correlate with the EMCW 2015 Expo and Conference (see photos). MDL will participate in the IEEE ECCE Conference next week in Montreal. In early October, David Staton and Dan Ionel will attend the Coil and Winding (CWIEME) Show in Chicago-Rosemont, IL. Event information for these and other upcoming events is given below.
