The IET System Safety Engineering Technical Network are pleased to announce that Paulo Oliveira, Humberside Associate Director at ESC has been nominated Vice Chair. Paulo has been working with the TN since 2018.


Paulo’s role as Vice Chair will be focused in identifying and presenting hot topics for discussion, drive engagement, input into TN plan and budget for the year as well as deputising for the IET Safety Chair.


The IET System Safety Engineering TN supports activities that improve the development and assurance of safe systems drawing together professionals working in functional and system safety as well as helping the development of safe systems and services by giving safety issues proper consideration as part of system engineering.


The TN interests include functional safety, Human Factors, Systems of systems and dynamic management of safety and exploring the interactions between safety, cyber security, resilience and other allied disciplines.


Amongst its many activities like conferences, seminars and webinars the network has supported a number of initiatives including the recently developed and published IET code of practice for Cyber Security and Safety.

Paulo is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with more than 10 years’ experience in asset management and safety applications. Paulo has split his experience in project, maintenance and safety roles in hazardous and non- hazardous industries, such as chemical, steel and FMCG. Paulo was the Functional Safety Leader for a COMAH top tier site where he was accountable for the development and implementation of IEC61511 compliant systems, covering the whole lifecycle including competence and with links to broader Process Safety areas like process hazard analysis, human factors, alarm management and compliance auditing under OSHA 1910 supported by a Masters degree in Process Safety and Loss Prevention. Paulo specialises in Process Safety and IEC61508/61511 compliance, certification and broader reliability analysis, including experience in chairing SIL Determination studies (UK and ME), SIL verification and reliability modelling, IEC61511/IEC61508 compliance gap analysis, Functional Safety Assessments, competence reviews, alarm management studies and product certification including FMEA studies.


Paulo is a member of the BSI GEL/065/01 committee and IEC61508 working group 14 and 17 and regularly presents on Functional Safety related topics in seminars, evening lectures and conferences in UK and ME.
