Continuing Professional Development, or CPD, is the maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills relevant to you remaining a competent engineer or technician. As you will know, the Engineering Council has stated that members of the institution should undertake a minimum of 30 hours of CPD a year. These 30 hours can be achieved in a number of different ways, including through training courses.

Here at the IET, we offer many different courses, which cover a range of different topics and these are delivered in a variety of ways meaning they are accessible in at least one means to those interested.

Below is a breakdown of how many hours could be included in the different types of training we have to offer at the IET:

Face to Face Training
1 Day Training Courses – 7 hours:

Our one day training courses are face-to-face with a specialised trainer and are offered in a range of locations throughout the UK including; Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and London.

These one day courses include topics such as:

  • Specification Writing

  • Commercial Awareness for Technical People

  • Introduction to TRIZ

  • Contract Law

2 Day Training Courses – 14 hours:

Similar to our one day courses, but for a longer duration and covering more content, our two day professional development courses cover a range of different topics including:

  • Technical Report Writing

  • Project Management Techniques

  • Mastering Requirements using MBSE

Online Training
Webinars/e-classes - 1 hour:

We host 1 webinar and 1 e-class a month which cover a variety of different topics from Fundamentals of Project Management and Introduction to Management to Back to Basics with Presenting and Making an Impact with your CV.

These e-classes are £30 for members, and £35 for non-members ( VAT), but they will give you the key skills you need using theories and concepts which will then allow you to take these away and use in your own personal or professional life.

Apposed to this, the webinars are offered for free of charge as they are focused around softer skills, allowing you the opportunity to develop or improve skills you currently possess.
