The West Cumbria Network volunteers recently organised a visit to the M-Sport facility.  Here is a report from Joseph Dabrera, the West Cumbria Convenor.

"The visit to MSport was excellent and the high standard maintained by M-Sport staff has much to do with their success in motor sports. The owner Malcolm Wilson is a man of vision and persistence in that he was able to select the premises and secure funding for such a privately owned business which has had considerable success in motor sports. The M-Sport expansion and investment in education and training of employees continues and must be a prime factor in their business success. The Tour included a behind the scenes of the development of the Ford Fusion and Bentley continental GT racing cars."

One of the tour attendee’s thoughts

“Although I knew the background to M Sport and Malcolm Wilson's part in it having been a regular visitor to his father’s scrap yard the visit to M Sport to see it in the flesh proved to be an eye opener.  This was in terms of the number of employees, the obvious extensive capital investment the quality of the facilities and auto related technical capabilities. The quality aspects also had parallels with the nuclear industry in the need for a high standard of working conditions and reliability. Although a car tends to be thought of as a mechanical device there is plenty of opportunities for IET members to take up a career in the automotive industry and probably more so in the future with the development of electric cars.

Malcolm Wilson certainly deserves credit for developing such an impressive business in the local area and one with significant plans for the future it certainly deserves to be given more publicity than it gets for the achievements, investment and commitment to the local area”.
