'Mega Trends in client side energy management - Evolution of on-premise equipment and systems'Ottawa LN recently organised an excellent tech talk by Gord Echlin. Edwin Morton gave the introduction -  Gord is VP Marketing and Business Development for Triacta Power Solutions LP. He is a computer scientist and technologist by education. Prior to Triacta he worked in Mitel and Newbridge. He is entrepreneurial and supports his local community in many ways.

Attendance was good on a very wet Ottawa night with 16 members present.  The talk was lively and well orchestrated by our speaker.

He started with an overall description of energy metering and its evolution over three decades, with an emphasis on major trends impacting innovation during this time. We covered regulation, energy conservation, accountability for energy consumption as a beginning of the focus and as time evolved towards the present we looked at micro grids, the impact of edge computing, how cloud apps and higher performance protocols impact innovation and finally we looked at how security, blockchain and AI all have started to show up in this dynamically changing energy provisioning market. The talk was concluded with a discussion of energy as a service. Gord handled many questions with ease and engaged the audience in several debates around energy use, conservation and human factors.

The evening closed with a vote of thanks from David Mann, accompanied by a solid round of applause from the audience. The speaker stayed around after the talk to take part in informal discussion with attendees. Feedback on the talk has been very good and we feel that more talks on this topic are merited.
