Young Professionals Programme (YPP)

OBJECTIVES

  • To nurture young professionals in the industry (and potential YMSC members)

  • To promote the IET and its professional registration system

  • To promote the IET Hong Kong and its 6 local TPNs

  • To increase participation of YMS in STEM education

Young Professionals Programme (YPP) would be an engineering elite programme open for graduate engineers of the year (or the year before also) annually.  Interested individuals will be required to submit their CV as well as a completed application form consisting of introductory texts and their answers to some engineering topics.  With reference to their CVs and application forms, a total of 10 candidates would be selected to join YPP.

YPP would be offering the candidates chances to meet respected engineers in town in “Talk with the Management” sessions, as well as hands-on project management experience in “Management in Action” training.  From January to May, YPP candidates would be meeting once every month, i.e. five meetings would be held officially under YPP with each composing the two aforesaid elements.

Talk with the Management:  A total of five sessions based on the five competence area established in the IET CEng criteria.  For each area, one (or two) esteemed engineer(s) in local TPNs would be invited to give a talk to the candidates on a relevant topic (target to have one from each TPN throughout the whole programme).  Free Q&A chatting time would be allowed afterwards to give the candidates sufficient time to interact with the guest.

Management in Action:  In the first meeting, candidates would be divided into two teams of five, each following a YMS mentor to organise a STEM event for local secondary school students which would be held on the meeting day in May.  In the first four meetings, different project management techniques would be explored and applied in the corresponding stage (e.g. project planning in the first meeting, labour division in the second). While YPP candidates would be responsible for the whole event, YMS mentors and helpers would offer necessary assistance to ensure safety and event quality.

YPP is a half-year elite programme for local young engineers. Selected candidates would be meeting each other on one Saturday afternoon per month for seminars and workshops on engineering management. In YPP, we would like to provide a casual environment for candidates to learn about management and offer opportunities to implement through team projects. Meanwhile, candidates could connect with each other and the guests who come from various engineering disciplines. The skillset and professional network candidates acquire in YPP would definitely bring synergy to work performance.
