Advancing into 2017, I can’t believe a month has gone already.  2016 was a good year for the Aerospace Network,  we started the year off  with an All Electric Aircraft Seminar.  This attracted academics and industrialists working in this emerging hot topic area. Following on from the conference we produced this Technical Insight .

In April we linked up with the Aviation Electronics Europe Conference/Exhibition and one of the volunteers joined the conference programming committee and chaired a session on SESAR, we also managed to support a UAV workshop organised by the RAeS Germany Branch.  If you didn’t manage to make it to Munich, you can view the presentations here   Bob Darby one of our volunteers chaired a session at the conference and wrote this blog during the conference.

Picking up on the AEA theme, our China office staff organised a seminar on More Electric Aircraft MEA in April which our volunteers were happy to contribute to by way of speaker/topic suggestions. This event proved to be a great success and there are plans for a Call for Papers event in 2017.

In June we linked up with the Satellite Systems & Applications/Robotics & Mechatronics TPNs to organise an evening seminar on the Rosetta Spacecraft.  We had two excellent speakers Dr Mark Bentley, Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Dr Paolo Ferri, ESA’s European Space Operations Centre, Germany and you view their presentations slides here.    We had lots of positive feedback from this event and it was a pity that the torrential rainstorms caused disruption on the rail network, which meant some people were unable to get into London.  With hindsight we should have had a Plan B and had some water taxis on standby!

During the summer, instead of having a breather, some of our volunteers linked up with the Swindon Local Network committee at RIAT 2016; I understand that the Glider Simulator sourced by the LN proved to be popular    and they also linked up with the ADS at Futures Day at Farnborough and created this blog

In October, we held an inaugural event on Addressing Sustainment Issues in Ageing Aircraft which was attended by both civil and military specialists.  This was well received and the TPN are looking to hold a follow-on event next session.  You can catch up with the presentations here and also some podcasts with a couple of the speakers.

Towards the end of the year, Lee Murton, Chairman of the YP Group attended an International Cross-Safety Conference in Amsterdam – see here for Lee’s blog which contains some interesting podcasts with one of the speakers.

2016 activities ended with an evening seminar on Concurrent Engineering at Rolls Royce in Derby and a well-earned rest for our volunteers.
