Step into Tech is a new social enterprise founded in November 2016 to make sure we are doing all we can to help all our children reach their full tech potential. Our steering group brings together parents, educators, employers and tech specialists.Existing initiatives to help children get involved with technology tend to focus on narrow age ranges, and on coding rather than the wider world of technology. Many are targeted at schools rather than involving parents/carers. Opportunities can be particularly limited in disadvantaged areas, for parents with limited income and for home-schooled children.

Step into Tech is targeted at children aged 8-18 years, who may or may not have existing interests in creating with technology, along with their parents or carers. Step into Tech adds to existing initiatives in three key ways:

- Building connections across the community that make it easier for everyone – parents, teachers, tech clubs and other support providers – to work together in supporting our children

- Identifying – and where necessary developing – resources that help parents and teachers provide the right help for each individual child. This will include guidance offering explanations and inspiration for parents (and children themselves), best practice materials for teachers, and an online directory of tech-related workshops and other opportunities.

- Creating events and opportunities in areas of need. The need is clearly demonstrated by the sharp growth in attendance at Step into Tech’s pilot Young Makers Tech Club in Norwich, which has already outgrown its initial location, and the enthusiastic reception for our first Norwich Techathon from both parents, children and the business community. Parents and educators in several other locations are actively engaged with Step into Tech in exploring how they can set up their own, local Tech Clubs.

Following up on the success of our Techathon in April, I am delighted to let you know that we will be holding another event as part of this October’s Norwich Science Festival.

Our first Techathon was supported by Aviva, Microsoft, Almary Green and a host of Norwich businesses and individuals. I’d like to invite you to join Norfolk County Council and other supporters in making this one an even greater success, helping to inspire and support the next generation of tech innovators.

Please find enclosed details of the sponsorship packages for the Techathon. I also enclose background information on Step into Tech and our work.

I very much hope you will be able to support this event. I look forward to discussing how we could best work together to enable our young people’s tech futures.

Techathon
A fun filled event

The Techathon lets young people aged 8 to 18 explore the possibilities of technology in an informal and creative environment. Over the course of two days, each team takes on one of our challenges, trying out ideas, finding out what works and what doesn’t.

It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, expert mentors and even potential future employers. It’s a fun-packed event with the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends and even win prizes. Find out more in our FAQs, or;http://stepintotechathon.org/

Tickets for the two day event cost a maximum of £10, and include lunch, snacks and refreshments on both days.

Prizes

There are four prizes: Idea, Teamwork, Awesomeness and Implementation.
