IEEE ComSoc Bahrain and IET Bahrain would like to invite you to attend joint technical seminar on
"5G Mobile Networks: The Next Breakthrough Technology"
April 09, 2017 @ 7:00 pm @Bahrain Society of Engineers, Juffair

Speaker (1)  :Mr. Wafeeq Ajoor, Bahrain ComSoc Vice Chair
Title: 5G Mobile Technology, the Enabler of 2020 Networked Society (ITU vision)

Bio: Wafeeq Ajoor [IEEE-M’1999/SM’2009] (wajoor@ieee.org) has received his M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Wireless/Mobile Communications) from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is the Vice Chair of IEEE ComSocBahrain Chapter. He has been a reviewer for the IEEE Communications magazine. His current research interest is 5G Mobile/Wireless Communications (IoT/M2M/Smart-Healthcare).

Abstract: The buzz in the industry on future steps in mobile technology (“5G”) has seen a sharp increase, with attention now focused on enabling a seamlessly connected society in the 2020 timeframe and beyond that brings together people along with things, data, applications, transport systems and cities in a smart networked communications environment. When fully deployed, 5G is expected to provide numerous advantages, including gigabit data rates, ubiquitous coverage, ultralow latency, and improved connectivity for connected vehicles as well as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. This presentation provides an overview on 5G mobile technology that includes 5G objectives, challenges, key enabling technologies (air interface and network), services and applications.

Speaker (2) : Dr. Mohab Mangoud, Bahrain ComSoc Chair
Title: Milimeter Wave communications (mmWave) for 5G, opportunities and challenges

Bio: received B.Sc and M.Sc from Alexandria university in 1993 and 1996 respectively, Ph.D degree from University of Bradford, Bradford, UK in 2001. He worked as a senior RF Engineer for Airbus-Astrium Space Lmt, Hertfordshire, UK, in the field of space and commercial communications satellites. Dr. Mangoud was adjunct Professor of ECE department, Virginia Tech., USA. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of wireless communications, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of Bahrain (UOB), Bahrain. Dr. Mangoud is currently the chair of IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Bahrain chapter and the Vice Chair of IEEE Bahrain Section.

Abstract: Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies 30-300 GHz used extensively for long-distance point-to-point communication in satellite and terrestrial applications, but were not considered before for cellular systems. Towards 5G, the current research and proposals investigating the use  of 5G for commercial cellular systems. this seminar will present the current situation research in this field and  the challenges of using mmWaves in 5G  will be discussed.
