The 4th Smart Display research group Meeting (SDM) of the IIEEJ was held in the Science and Engineering School, Waseda University, on 16th December 2017, under the chairmanship of Dr. M. Matsumoto, Prof. Emeritus of Waseda Univ., former IET-JN Chairman.

Fifteen members from industry and academia participated. The meeting was supported by the IET Japan network (IET-JN), the Electronic Application Conference Group and the common area group for Architecture and Image Media.

As the keynote lecture, Dr. Shunsuke Kobayashi, Emeritus Professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, introduced recent topics from the history of information displays, taking up the theme of optical communication, quantum computers, and medical images, which has received attention from the field of optical engineering.

In the following session, Dr. K. Sato, former Professor of Shonan Institute of Technology(SIT), Dr. K. Takano, Associate Professor of Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology(TMCIT) and Mr. M. Totsuka, graduate of SIT, presented overview of Holographical projection system and transmission system applications.

Dr. Matsumoto and Mr. H. Fujita, Director of R&D at Toyo Electric Corp, introduced the brief history, challenge items, influence of the atmospheric turbulence and development of practical devices for Optical Wireless Communication, involving Infrared (IR), Visible Light(VLC) and Free Space Optics(FSO).

After the lecture session, a social gathering was held in which Dr. Saba, chairman for IET-JN introduced it's activities and collaboration between IET-JN and other organizations. The group expanded views on the optical engineering topics to future prospects and the conversations lasted for about two hours. The SDM appreciated the support by IET Japan Network for this meeting. The next event is to be determined.
