However, this year’s event looked a little different as we hosted it virtually via Zoom. Whilst we do miss the in-person version of our Welcome Event, we were very excited at the challenge of adapting this event to the new Virtual frontier for the first time.

Our annual Welcome Event was created introduce Students and Young Professionals alike to the IET, as well as providing the opportunity to network in a fun environment with games. We brought forward a mix of individual and team activities so that our participants could interact with each other and compete. The activities included:

  1. Kahoot! Quiz: This is an app where a quiz can be created and be played online. Questions from the Committee were created and approved with different topics including: Film, Video Games, Science, Geography, etc.

  • Skribbl.io: This is a drawing game like Pictionary. Each person takes it in turns to draw out a word whilst the other participants guess. You get more points depending on how fast you guess what they are drawing as well! The person with the most amount of points at the end of the game is the winner.

  • Our own version of Dungeons and Dragon which we called “Cave Systems and Fire Lizards”, where nothing is as it seems and the items you choose will have effects that you don’t expect. Each Team had to choose an item and the outcome changed depending on what was chosen. Our Publicity Officer Vanessa Stanley and Nathanael Craig wrote the script with our Treasurer Calvin Chan as our Dungeon Master. You can read the official script for the game in the attached file at the top of this blog post! Here are the options each Team chose at the event:
    • Team 1: Chicken, Nothing, Legendary Sword

  • Team 2: Small Sack of Coins, Bachelor's Degree, Golden Shield

  • An informative talk about the IET and our Committee which was delivered by our Senior Vice Chair Andrew Tickle before closing out the event.

We would like to give thanks to all who attended the event. As a committee, we had a wonderful time planning it and hope that you enjoyed it just as much!

There will be a full video of the event on our official YouTube Channel as well as event photos coming soon, courtesy of Andrew and our new Media Officer Hannah Harper.
