On Wednesday 9th October 2019, the IET Young Professionals for Coventry and Warwickshire hosted their annual Welcome Event at Coventry University’s Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. The Welcome Event has been set up to introduce students to the IET, as well as providing the opportunity for them to get to know each other and network in a hands-on environment. The event itself was formed of three parts:
  1. An icebreaker where attendees got to know each other. Each attendee put one shoe in the middle of the room, take a random shoe from the pile, find its owner and then play a game of “Who am I?”

  • The Main Activities, of which there were two. The first was students had to work together to create the most effective contraptions to protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a height, all with limited time and resources. The second was attempting to score the most points by using a wooden trebuchet to strike a cardboard castle, which involved using good strategy, aim, and a keen head for physics.

  • An informative talk about who the IET and the Young Professionals Committee are and what we do, which was delivered by our Chair and Senior Vice Chair to the attendees before closing out.

Our Senior Vice Chair Andrew Tickle has also create an official video of the event, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG4-2kvXLV4

We always love it when we see the students come together during this time. The Young Professionals Committee firmly believes that one of the great benefits of this event is how the community is built around the network, as well as Coventry University’s Engineering Faculty.

This year, our Welcome Event had over double the turnout of the previous year, as well as the return of two much-loved activities in the Egg Drop and Trebuchet Challenge. The success not only helps us bring future events to Young Professionals in Coventry and Warwickshire, but it also allows us to reach out to other IET Local Networks around the country to bond and collaborate with them in future.

The IET Young Professionals Committee for Coventry and Warwickshire is made of a mixture of students/staff members from Coventry University, as well as professionals/graduates in STEM industry roles from around the West Midlands. We are heavily based at Coventry University, holding IET and STEM related events and networking opportunities; and sharing interesting current affairs within STEM. The Committee is very open to new members and forming relationships with other IET Networks, Universities, STEM Organisations and Companies.
