About:

Following the success of the last two years, the IET's Engineering Open House Day returns this summer.

Taking place at venues across the UK on Friday 28 July, Engineering Open House Day highlights to young people and their parents what it’s like to work as an engineer by giving special, behind-the-scenes access to a wide variety of organisations to demonstrate how creative, exciting and innovative a career in engineering could be.

Last year, there were 28 events including the Sky Academy Skills Studio in Isleworth, Atkins in Epsom, the BBC in Salford, Tower Bridge in London, Caterpillar in Peterlee, Engineering Education Centre in Dumfries House Ayrshire, Aberdeen Science Centre, and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot.

We want to encourage more young people and their parents to consider engineering as an exciting career choice. To help do this, the IET is inviting organisations and brands to get involved and run their own events as part of Engineering Open House Day.

Alison Carr, IET Director of Governance and Policy, said: “Engineering Open House Day came about as a result of research we carried out which showed that parents do not know enough about engineering and the many exciting career opportunities it holds for their children.

“Events will vary from location to location, but they could include an engineer highlighting how they got their job, hands-on activities for young people, a guided tour, or letting visitors have a go at using some of the technology – the more interactive and ‘hands on’ the better. Although what’s on offer will vary, each event will showcase engineering as an exciting and rewarding career option.”
