2 minute read time.
After the first Scotland North meeting of 2017, I thought I would give you an insight into what happens behind the activities that you see advertised – and there is a lot.

For those that don’t know the layout of the Scotland North Committee, the area is split into districts that each have a representative on the Scotland North Committee.  The Committee pulls together the event plans for the year and submits the budget.  The Scotland North Committee organises events in Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth, Thurso, Orkney, Shetland, Stornoway.  These events cover a range of engineering, management and general interest.

So, what has been happening in the districts over the past few months, what happens behind the scenes?  This week I have focused on the Aberdeen district.

Bit of background for those on the community page who are not local.

Aberdeen is a port city in northeast Scotland, where the Dee and Don rivers meet the North Sea. With an offshore petroleum industry, the city is home to an international population. It's also known as the ‘Granite City’ for its many enduring grey-stone buildings.

Events that have happened so far -

Chartership Event

Since October, the Aberdeen District have been busy.  They have been working in conjunction with SUT on the Chartership Event in Partnership.  There was the opportunity to discuss the peer interview stage of the Chartership process, and a chance to review your Chartership evidence with your respective institution.  The institutions represented at this event are: IMechE, IMarEST, ICE and IET

A presentation titled  “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – Chartership Interviews” was followed by the main workshop.

MeyGen

A topical talk from Tim Cornelius, CEO of MeyGen who presented on MeyGen’s 398MW offshore tidal stream turbine project which will supply clean and renewable electricity to the UK National Grid by the early 2020’s. Tim’s talk provided a general overview of the project, while focusing on aspects such as key technical challenges and solutions, economics and regulatory & environmental challenges.

See www.meygen.com for more background information.

The committee are in the process of setting up or investigating the following events, so keep an eye on the community page for details.

As you can imagine, to put together this quantity of quality events for anyone to attend for free is a pretty impressive feat for our volunteers.  If you feel you can offer help or would like to volunteer, please get in touch.

Next week I will cover the Caithness & Orkney district.
