About:

After the success of last year's inaugural event, the IET Engineering Open House Day returns this summer.

Taking place at venues across the UK, the aim of Engineering Open House Day is to help young people and their parents understand what it’s like to work as an engineer by giving special, behind-the-scenes access to a wide variety of organisations to demonstrate how creative and innovative a career in engineering could be.

Over 20 organisations have signed up to take part in this year’s event, doubling the number of participants last year. Organisations opening their doors include Sky Academy Skills Studio in Isleworth, Atkins in Epsom, the BBC in Salford, Tower Bridge in London, Caterpillar in Peterlee, Engineering Education Centre in Dumfries, Aberdeen Science Centre, and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot. A full list of venues and locations can be found on the Engineering Open House Day web page.

The IET Engineering Open House Day is one of several initiatives that make up the IET’s Engineer a Better World Campaign. The variety of exciting, creative and stimulating careers in modern engineering is vast, yet demand for engineers far exceeds supply. The campaign aims to change this by getting more young people – and their parents – to think differently about careers in engineering.

“Research for our Engineer a Better World campaign showed that parents do not know enough about engineering and the many exciting career opportunities it holds for their children. That’s why we launched the IET Engineering Open House Day as an exciting way of educating children and their parents about the vast range of opportunities engineering has to offer,” said IET President Naomi Climer.

“Now in its second year, it’s amazing to see such a diverse mix of engineering talent coming together to support this initiative. Children and their parents will get the chance to find out what life is like as an engineer, discover how things work and explore the abundance of exciting jobs within the industry. We hope that these initiatives will make a real contribution to inspiring a new generation of engineers.”

For further details on Engineering Open House Day events and how to register, please visit the Engineer a Better World website. In the run up to, and during the day, you can also watch all the events unfold on social media by following #IETOpenHouse.

  • We are also looking for any local IET members who would like the opportunity to be involved with the day? They are looking for local engineers to share their stories and assist with an exciting programme of presentations, hands on activities and drop in workshops.
