The IET Brunei Young Professional Section (YPS) and Oil & Gas Discovery Centre Brunei have conducted IET Do-It-Yourself Faraday Challenge Preliminary Round 2 for students in Year 9. In this preliminary round, there are total of 36 students representatives come from 6 schools; namely St John's School, Chung Hua Middle School, International School Brunei, St George's School, Sekolah Menengah Muda Hashim, and Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali. The event was held on Sunday, 13th May 2018 in KB Sentral Shopping Centre.

The aim of the activity is to give students opportunity to research, design, and make prototype solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems. This is in-line with the IET Brunei vision and mission in promoting the general advancement of science, engineering, and technology and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on these subjects amongst the general public especially students.

The challenge was based on the IET Faraday Challenge events held at secondary schools in the United Kingdom. Students were given tasks as engineer specialists recruited by a mock company and were asked to design and construct a prototype within the limited time.

The whole exercise gave the students insight into the roles and responsibilities of an engineering team as they not only attempted to create their prototypes but also had to justifytheir ideas, cost, and implementation plans to the judges. This challenge also encouraged the development of students' problem solving, team working, and communication skills.

Each winner of this round received BND200.00 cash prize and proceed to National Final Faraday Challenge on 2nd September 2018 at Aman Hills Shopping Centre. The three winners of Preliminary Round 2 are Chung Hua Middle School, St George's School, and St John's School. The prize was presented by Lt. Col. (U) Schufin Bin Hj Ibrahim, the IET Brunei Honorary Chairman for 2017-2018 session.
