The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei conducted a technical visit to Narcotics Control Bureau, Prime Minister’s Office, Brunei Darussalam.  A total of 17 IET members joined the visit. They were welcomed and briefed by Awang Osmawi bin Haji Osman, the Acting Deputy Director, and Haji Nawawi bin DP Haji Jaidin, Senior Narcotics Officer I. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is a government department under the Prime Minister’s Office. It was set up on 1st October 1988 specifically to take over the responsibilities of enforcing relevant drug laws in Brunei Darussalam from the Royal Brunei Police and the Preventive Drug Education activities from the Anti Drug Unit which was under the purview of the Ministry of Education.

 

The aims of the visit were to give the IET members an insight on how NCB as the lead agency in enforcing the relevant laws pertaining to the eradication of abuse of drugs and intoxicating substances; how NCB provide support services in demand and reduction through Preventive Drug Education and Aftercare Services; and how NCB as the main agency in coordinating all matters pertaining to the eradication of the abuse of drugs and intoxicating substances.

 

The IET members were also given an insight on the different types of illegal drugs available in Brunei as well as interesting statistics on the subject of drug abuse in Brunei.
