Liu Fang Ying, MIET
YP Women Section Committee, IET YP Singapore 2018/19

Technology is my passion. From my youth, I always believed that the purpose of technology is to help humanity. Technology helps make our lives better, and it%u2019s constantly growing and evolving. You may not know what is to become of technology, such as virtual reality or the Internet of things (IoT), but you can see how it is being shaped and how it is helping people.
I grew up in the Chinese city of Shenyang, a commercial and transportation hub in the north eastern province of Liaoning, about 250 miles from the border with North Korea. I was sponsored by government to study Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the Nanyang Technology University in Singapore. I studied abroad in Sweden, where studied artificial intelligence (AI), embedded systems, and other subjects.
Recently, I completed Master%u2019s degree in Technology Management at the National University of Singapore.
After graduating from university, I worked in the Technology Infrastructure group at Merrill Lynch, first as a Storage Analyst before taking on capacity planning, NAS configuration, failure troubleshooting, and data recovery. I also worked with the Market Data team at Merrill Lynch before joining the data enter team and serving as a Data Center Operations Manager for three years. In this role, I managed more than 40 leased and owned data enters in Singapore, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Taiwan. In Jan 2018, I joined Microsoft as Data Center Site Services Manager in the Singapore data center. I lead a team of seven engineers and one senior engineer. I think the goal of technology is to solve problems that people encounter. And that is what I find interesting about technology. You will never become bored as you take on new challenges.
