Professional Kickstart – Invitation to a Professional Future

Singapore Local Network Chair Jolyon Caplin welcomed many fresh faces to this IET Singapore Young Professional Section Event along with a few more seasoned hands here to share their seasoning.

Mike Henry introduced the IET emphasising the variety of fields and worldwide locations in which IET members work making it a truly varied and global home for technology professionals. He also highlighted the networking opportunities provided including how when he first came to Singapore and was helped in landing on his feet by members of the Singapore Local Network. When asked if membership was worth it, his answer was a resounding Yes.

Dr Andrew Ng then presented the Chartered Engineer designation. First though, he asked the room to think of three words which they felt described what chartered engineer means to us... The popular answers ranged from the expected “Professional” and “Capable” to the more colourful “Rockstar”.

He described the benefits of chartership and explained to us his path towards certification through the help of a professional advisor to the use of the online Career Manager tools highlighting how while the form may at first look daunting, with a little bit of organisation and with the help and resources provided, it is not as scary as it appears.

Our last speaker was Dr VK Liau who gave us an overview of the Singapore PSB Academy On-Campus Group from founding in November 2016 to winning On-Campus Group of the Year award in 2017. One of the highlights for the students was a trip to London where they met many senior IET leaders including IET President Mr Nick Winser, and CEO Mr Nigel Fine along with a special lunch with none other than Sir Robin Saxby.

Some light networking followed where attendees took stock of the presentations and discussed future projects and events. I for one was inspired to dig out my Chartership forms to have another crack at.

Thank you to all of the attendees and of course to our three presenters for sharing their story and knowledge and to all who helped make this event happen.
