Weekend Quiz. Back to Basics.

Q.1. There are two resistors in series in a circuit, of 18 Ohms and 22 Ohms resistance. The current through the 18 Ohm resistor is 6 Amps. Calculate the supply Voltage to the circuit.

Q.2 There are three resistors of resistance 20 Ohms, 10 Ohms and 8 Ohms connected in parallel to a 6 Volt D.C. supply. Calculate:

a, The total resistance.

b, The current taken from the supply.

Q.3. A coil of 30 Ohms reactance is connected to a 200 Volt A.C. supply circuit, in series with a of 50 Ohms resistance. A capacitor of 30 Ohms reactance is connected in series with the coil. Calculate,

a, The circuit impedance.

b, The current drawn from the supply.

c, The power used.

  • One of my technical college lecturers was not as clever as your Mr. Brocklebank, but he could dictate to us from a book whilst at the same time create drawings and circuit diagrams on the black board in chalk for us to copy down later.

  • One of my technical college lecturers was also a local authority building inspector. He could be home for tea at 4:30 after finishing work at 5:00. Beat that!

    Since you insist ...

I went up to Basingstoke to have a look at a car at the M-B dealer. Naturally, I popped into Berry Bros' warehouse next door afterwards. Somebody said "Hello". It was a colleague who had been working all day in Havant. It was 14:30. If you don't know 'ampshire, look it up on Google. ?

Try living in Gosport and working in Southampton! ?

Either way, it's only a couple of years to go before the "smart" M27's 50 mph limit will be gone. ?

An engineer reporting to me in Southampton asked to work from home in Portsmouth one day so she could take delivery of a bicycle purchased on the 'Cycle to work' scheme. I agreed but said she should make sure she had a safe route to cycle to the office, to which she replied "I checked it out when I ran home last night!'

  • That is a half marathon!

Some people are clearly ready for the post car era in advance.

Mind you I know a good  no. of folk who cycle from Winchester to Romsey, which is similar, maybe 12 miles instead of 13.

Both cities cover quite large areas, but from one Council offices to the other is 20 miles, or 18 if you cheat and use the ferry. ?‍♀️

  • OK, she did admit she was in training for a marathon, but it was about 20 miles (should have been a bit over 18, but she went wrong at one point).
