New IET Electrical Website

Hi All

Have you seen the new IET Electrical website at https://electrical.theiet.org/?

It's been updated to reflect the IET's new branding.

Let us know what you think!

  • Just took a look. Still have to log-in.

Why does the single log-in not work?

    Regards

    Mike

  • Tis true, so it is. When I tried to open the file an error message stated that I had to buy Windows Office.

Don't believe everything Micro$oft tell you. If you'd installed one of the alternatives (such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice) it would have worked fine without having to buy anything. On the other hand it might have been easier to read if it had been in a more portable format such as PDF - but then if the form has to be filled in and returned (rather than just read) then the "writer" versions of Adobe Acrobat aren't free or commonly pre-installed so you're back to the same problem again. You could have a web-based form that anyone could fill in and submit using any browser, but then the user doesn't get an opportunity to keep a copy of what they're submitted (or format it nicely) so not ideal either.

  • www.office.com  lets you use Office in browser for free with any Microsoft account - chances are you might already have one, if not they are free to set up.

  • Typiod:

    Zoomup:

The EngTech application form is only downloadable if you have "Windows Office" which I haven't. So I can't view it.

Not true Zoomup. Any office programme will open a docx file, plenty of free ones about, such as Libra office.

Thanks Typiod, but why would a company give me anything for nothing. Sweets from a stranger and all that. It makes me suspicious. What might be hiding in the Trojan horse?

  • Pardon my curiosity if this question seems to be going off the point, but we are talking websites anyway.

Why does the IET domain name have a "the" in it, rather than simply "iet.org"?

I can understand this for some other organisations. For instance, the Automobile Association has the domain "theaa.com". I imagine it would have preferred to have just "aa.com", but American Airlines beat it to it.

However the domain "iet.org" does not seem to exist. Try visiting places like "iet.org", or "www.iet.org", etc., and it either diverts to the IET home page or kicks in the search engine, which finds our home page immediately.

I'd just be curious to know.
  • This certainly isn't an official reply, but I would guess it's because we're known as The IET? IMechE aren't known as The IMechE, so their URL is imeche.org.

    Just a guess from me!
  • Hi Denis McMahon‍

From memory (which is now going back 13 years) in 2007 when The IET was created as a result of the merger between the IEE and the IIE the domain name IET.org was already taken and in use by someone else and therefore we adopted TheIET.org instead. I remember a number of emails being sent to us by the owner of IET.org because their mailserver was being flooded with misaddressed emails. ?

I'm guessing that in the 13 years that have now passed the original owner has either relinquished the domain to us or has let it lapse which has enabled us to now put a redirect in place. I do notice though that by entering iet.org you get a 'domain not found' message but searching for www.iet.org will redirect you to Theiet.org so probably a question for the webmaster to look into!

  • I guess it depends on your browser.  On my computer, with Opera or Firefox, iet.org takes you to theiet.org homepage.  But Edge gets lost and says "Page not Found"

I don't have Chrome to try.

  • It's a bit like the Automobile Association, their "ideal" website would have been www.AA.whatever, but the .com and the .co.uk were both grabbed by American Airlines and www.aa.org by Alcoholics Anonymous  and www.aa.org.uk resolves to my ISP Andrews & Arnold.

However www.iet.uk is available, if they are quick!

RE www.iet.org resolving to www.theiet.org there is no reason why the forwarding or redirecting cannot be set up so that www.iet.org not only shows the website, but iet.org is shown in the address bar. (I do that with one of my website, so no reason why the IET cannot do similar if they wish.

    Cheers!
