  • Really when you stop and think about it there was a time when you simply drove into the garage then wound the window down to tell the attendant how much fuel you wanted then paid without leaving the vehicle, if asked the attendant would also check and top up the tyres and fluids.

Now those were the days, no messing about with hoses or leads when you were suited and booted for an evening out.

  • I suppose it's one of the joys of modern life that you can use your phone to reserve a parking space in a city centre, such as in London or Birmingham as well as at an airport months in advance,  so long as you are prepared to pay the price.

When it comes to buying fuel I try to avoid motorway services, a couple of weeks ago my eyes watered when I had to get some in a motorway service area and I only put enough in to get back home.

If I go north of Birmingham I can easily save over twenty quid by not using the M6 toll road and pulling off the motorway to fill up with fuel.

I can send you a list of supermarkets with filling stations near Motorway junctions.

The M6 is rather poor with nothing between J2 and J29 (Preston) or J29 to J43 (Carlisle)

My pet hate is "chronic" being used as if it meant very bad - rather than just continuing for a long time.

Indeed! Pain from an acute illness may very well be worse than that of a chronic one.

I have used Tesco just off the M3/A34 junction on a number of occasions. There are numerous petrol stations just off the M27, but none on it save for Rownhams. Even then, Sainsbury's is not far from J3. I have also used an AsDa just off J8A of the M40.

What is the difference? 10 p/litre? So 50 l = £5, which buys you almost 4 l which takes you 20-odd miles in anything but an old Rolls-Royce.
  • Rooves - simply an alternative to roofs according to OED.

Dwarfs is more normal, but nowadays unless you are referring to, let's say a rose bush or a wall, you really ought to refer to a person of limited stature. ?

And never ever throw one. ?
  • Electric vehicles with compulsory rest breaks on extended journey will be seen as a life style choice for some years to come in a world where driving foot to the floor for hours on end clutching a mug of coffee is seen as normal by the majority of people.
