BEng to CEng registraiton

Hello,

I recently graduated from Lancaster University with a BEng honours degree while working full time as an electrical technician in 2016.

My experience from high school includes working as an electrician from 2007 to 2014 and an electrical technician from 2014 to 2016. I also worked as an electrician in Australia in 2017.

I recently joined a engineering consultancy in February 2018 and they are keen for their graduates to go for chartership after 4 years, however im worried i will not be able to achieve this goal as i am not educated up to MEng level. Would the next steps for me be applying for Engtech then IEng and finally CEng registration? It is really confusing as people are telling me i need to go back to University, but i cannot really afford this option while working full time also.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated with what steps to do next for me to achieve CEng status.

Thanks

Ben

  • As a registration assessor at the IET, can I emphasise the work based learning approach to proving UK&U. I ran an assessment panel last week and can honestly say that the majority of the candidates that passed were not holding masters degrees but had proved UK&U (Knowledge and understanding) based on initial academic qualifications and reinforced by structured on the job training.

A tip for anyone in consultency (like me) applying for Ceng registration, do focus on some of the traditionally weak competencies for consultents.  B1, C2 and C3.  These are looking after budgets, people aswell as being allowed to investigate problems. Too may consultants  are brought in to solve problems found by others. The role of the consultant.

Having followed this discussion in which much sound advice has been given, I am somewhat surprised there has been no mention of Career Manager, in particular the Self Assessment section. Using this can give an insight into achieved level of Competence and provide focus on gaps or where level needs to be raised. It can also prove useful in discussion when seeking advice from PRA, Mentor or even someone who has gone through the Professional Registration process.

As someone who has been involved in PRI's, I too, am aware of quite a number of candidates whose CEng application has been based on offering a BEng and Work Based Learning achieving a successful outcome.

Gerard's makes an important comment on Competences B1, C2 and C3. It's well worth applying some lateral thinking as there could be evidence that can be offered but which is not always immediately obvious when completing the application.

  • Hi all.

I would like to thank everyone for this information. I found it so useful to get the full idea for the CEng.

    Regards,
  • Once again guys, thank you for all your advice and experiences!

I did not expect to receive this much of a positive response to my question.

I feel much more assured about what i need to do going forward now.

    Cheers!
