Making things is “so not us”. Apart from our high energy costs and high labour costs we are trying to become a knowledge economy and a financial power house. Making things would also increase our CO2 output, it is cheaper and easier to get someone else to make them for us at a lower cost than we could manage because they pay their employees very little, use coal to generate electricity and have no worries about human rights. The odd manufacturer that succeeds in this country is usually sold off to our foreign competitors so they can asset strip(money and knowledge)  it and make things overseas cheaper. This has been going on for years with the full support of all the main political parties.

Is my cynicism showing?
