GCSE and A Level exams cancelled

The government has decided to cancel the GCSE and A Level exams in May & June 2020 as a result of the coronavirus, but they have not yet revealed (or even thought of?) an alternative method of determining the grades that the students will receive.

IMO it was a very rash decision by the government with potentially severe consequences as instead they should have waited until the start of the summer school term then assessed the coronavirus situation before reaching a conclusion whether to cancel or defer the exams. Students taking GCSEs and A Levels this year now have no idea what is happening regarding their grades.

What does the IET and the engineering community think of this move by the government?
