Underfloor heating thermostat use

What is the best way to set the thermostat for underfloor heating given the long warm up and cool down time.  Is there a practical way of optimising the energy considering this long lag?

Control it on slab temperature would be the optimum

For example, if the room design condition is say 21C, then once the floor slab temperature exceeds the equivalent mean radiant temperature for 21C then basically it stops giving out heat (heat cant flow uphill) if the room cools, then the slab begins to emit heat - if it cools quickly, then the slab then delivers more heat (bigger delta T) - not easy to do, but very effective if you can get the balance just right
