In my spare time I enjoy building and tinkering with things in the garage. Just before christmas last year I stumbled across a video of an electric hydrofoil (basically a surfboard with a propelled hydrofoil on the bottom) and decided that I need one in my life. You can buy them, but they are relatively new on the scene and £10k - completely out of my league and there's no fun in buying something off the shelf, is there!! The commercial hydrofoils are running direct drive inrunner brushless DC motors, somewhere in the region of 6kW, 120kV. To buy a motor from China is about £500 and the quality is lacking. Does any one have any experience in designing/building/manufacturing brushless DC motors that I could discuss things with?
