New 3hp table saw with magnetic stop start buttons but no overload protection visible.

As above, the 1 phase saw came with a flex and 16A plug  and  stop start buttons on the front about the size of a twin socketThere,s a no volt coil built into the button assembly, but no overload. The 16A plug suggested a direct connection to a wall socket, but surely a dol starter would be required

on the unit? Thanks for any advice.

  • Well if it was hard wired into something you were building BS 7671, it would need something, but not necessarily a sepearte box marked "starter", thought that would be the easiest..

    From the regs section 552

Every electric motor having a rating exceeding 0.37 kW shall be provided with control equipment

incorporating means of protection against overload of the motor.

This requirement does not apply to a motor incorporated in an item of current-using equipment complying as a whole with an appropriate British or Harmonized Standard.

So there are a couple of cases when there may not be a starter to see in the normal sense. Either the whole thing complies with a different standard not requiring one, or the overload protection is handled another equivalent way - so there may be some sort of overheat sensor or trip built into the motor itself - which is quite likely in a 'luggable' portable appliance, which is what this sounds like. (you'd not see a separate stater in a lawnmower for example)

    regards

    Mike.

  • Many thanks for the reply Mike,
