P50 Fire Extinguishers.

These new fire extinguishers are able to be used on electrical fires even though they are a foam type. Has anyone used one, and if so do they work well? They apparently do not need a fire engineer to service them annually and they have a ten year life. I have no connection with the makers or sellers.

Firstly an extinguisher engineer would carryout a service on a fire extinguisher ?, not used one but they are very expensive compared to the industry standard ones. So to recap, it's alot cheaper to buy standard extinguishers but these have to be checked annually, the P50 comes in at a very high entry point and I believe would still require an annual check in line with bs5306.

  • The whole point of these plastic bodied designs is that they do not need a skilled 3rd party to perform inspections and instead are designed to last ten years of user self inspection, and then can be  sent back to be checked over and refilled for £120 apparently. Not sure how much not having the inspections saves, I imagine for many cases it is probably worthwhile. Not used them either, but have had the advert.

Maybe so Mike, to my knowledge they are not covered under bs5306 so may invalidate insurance etc. If anyone here has been on a refresher course please let me know has I would be interested, thanks. Also do you know what fire rating these are?

    Hello Timeserved,

here is a link showing technical details. I have no connection with the company other than being an occasional buyer.

Thanks for the link Z, so it will cost you £120 +vat if someone sets it off compared to £34.50 for a foam 6ltr.

just done a quick calc its actually slightly cheaper for a experience engineer to attend site annually including the extended service, it also means that you spread the cost of the extinguisher and it's getting checked annually for correct location, area of use and if any new risks have been introduced etc.
