The IET is committed to promoting greater diversity in engineering. In May 2013 it signed up, along with other Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs), to a Diversity in Engineering concordat to pledge commitment to equality within the profession.
As part of this commitment the IET has pledged to take action to increase diversity among those in professional engineering membership and registration – and also to monitor and measure progress.
We already have a strong record of promoting gender diversity, for example the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards and our Women’s Network. We also require all our staff and professional registration volunteers to complete diversity training.
The recent LGBT survey run by E&T magazine is another example of our commitment to promoting diversity in engineering. If we can understand to what, if any, extent discrimination on the grounds of sexuality takes place in the engineering community, we will be in a stronger position to address any issues.

In conjunction with International Women in Engineering Day (Sunday 23 June), Pride Month and LGBT STEM Day (5th July) and to highlight diversity across engineering and technology – not just gender – the IET has launched a new social media campaign #IAmAnEngineer, which features a variety of real-life engineers.
