What's in a Borehole ? Petroleum and Energy Supply. From Hydrocarbon to Low Carbon.

There is an urgent requirement to reduce our combustion of fossil fuels in order to cut down on the emission of harmful greenhouse gases. However, our dependence on these products will continue for a very long time during the energy transition. We have already seen a similar energy transition from coal, which took roughly a century.
Ian Pigram has worked for more than 40 years as a geologist and petrophysicist, initially at ARCO and then BP. He worked on exploration, appraisal and development projects in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. His most recent project was carbon capture and storage.
He will outline the various technologies necessary to locate and develop oil/gas reserves before discussing the essential role played by geoscientists to evaluate hydrocarbon discoveries, and reflect on the way forward to a low carbon world.
