The many applications of vacuum and ion bombardment

An inaugural lecture by Prof John S. Colligon

Professor Colligon will explore some early uses of vacuum 5000 years ago and a, possibly dubious, demonstration of its strength. He will focus mainly on the use of vacuum to study ion-surface interactions, including his work done at the Royal Aircraft Establishment on drag forces, and damage thresholds for low-orbit satellites. He will describe applications of vacuum, including the important 2 million USD per annum field of surface coatings and possible future challenges, specifically in the field of tribology (i.e.reduction of friction, wear and corrosion in machines to save energy and materials).
