In the early days of programable industrial control systems (ICSs) the differences between Distributed Control Systems (DCSs), SCADA / PLCs and Telemetry systems were clear and unambiguous. However, over the years shifts in markets and technologies have seen a blurring of these definitions, with all three competing in some market sectors. Moreover, this ambiguity extends beyond just these system wide definitions. For instance, terms such as SCADA acquire different meanings dependant on industry and application. Despite the maturity of these technologies, this ambiguity continues to cause confusion among practitioners and academics alike, with an inevitable impact on both their deployment and research in the field.
