Electric Vehicle technologies and applications

This talk will introduce latest technological development of electric vehicles (EVs), with a focus on traction drives. The electrical system of electric vehicles includes batteries, electrical motors and powertrains, power converters and controllers. Moreover, the charging and discharging actions of EVs will impact on the network while various V2G technologies have been developed and trialled. Different motor technologies will be discussed and compared so as to meet stringent industrial requirements. The first of V2G charger was installed in Aston University campus and the related InnovateUK project will be described.


Wen Cao (Fellow, IET) received the B.Eng. in electrical engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China, in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical machines and drives from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, in 2004. 

Prof. Cao is currently the Chair Professor of Electrical Power Engineering with Aston University. He is a Committee Member for IET Midlands Power Group and the Chairman for the Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE UK and Ireland Section. He received a “Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award” in 2016, the “Dragon’s Den Competition Award” from Queen’s University Belfast, in 2014, the “Innovator of the Year Award” from Newcastle University, UK, in 2013. He has been Associate Editor for IET Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and several other international journals. His research interests include fault analysis and condition monitoring of electrical machines and power electronics.
