IET Malaysia technical talk on 27th Feb 2019.



Talk 1: IoT connectivity - LoRA, Sigfox, NB-IoT and LEO satellite IoT

Speaker: M Faizal Ali, Co-Founder & CEO of Vectolabs Sdn Bhd.



The talk will give the audience a broad understanding of different LPWAN technologies (Low power wide area network) and their suitable applications, and he will touch on a new technology of low earth orbit satellite IoT. Faizal will also talk about how setting up an LPWAN infrastructure can significantly lower connectivity costs, allow quick deployment of IoT devices and spur innovation for new solutions.



Vectolabs started out as a Kickstarter project for an accelerometer-based deceleration indicator for motorcycles. The founder moved himself and the company from San Diego, CA to Cyberjaya Malaysia and reinventing Vectolabs to be an IoT company. Today it focusses on developing smart city IoT devices with LPWAN technologies. Vectolabs first IoT product is a LoRA enabled smart street light controller and is deployed at UITM Shah Alam and have few installations in the book for 2019.



Faizal has a degree in Bachelor of Science, Computer Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY.



Talk 2: Artificial Intelligence on Energy Management

Speaker: Scott Cerreta, Managing Director (APAC) of METRON.



Energy management can be broadly defined as the proactive, organized and systematic management of energy use in a building or organization to satisfy both environmental and economic requirements. Companies across all sectors are turning to energy management as a means to reduce their operating costs. Specific requirements and practices differ by sector, but some of the core principles apply to all companies. This talk will explore on latest innovation in utilising machine learning, ontologies and virtual assistant in optimising energy usage and real use case where this has been successfully implemented across various industries around the world.



Scott is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and an active member in the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). He holds a B.A. in International Business and Management from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.
