A message from your local volunteer

Dear Shee

Greetings!
In partnership with Petrosains, KLCC we are inviting you to an educational evening to learn more about two interesting topics. This talk is brought to you by the tireless efforts of IET Malaysia's, Eur. Ing Fauzan Baharudin

Talk #1: Latest ICS cyber-attacks analysis and counter measures

ABSTRACT

The goal of this presentation is to analyse the steps of a classical ICS Cyber Attack on a Critical Infrastructure company and to explore possible counter-measures. In the first part of the presentation, we will watch a video of a realistic cyber attack on a Oil & Gas company IT and ICS network. After watching the video, we will look at the different phases of the attack and the vulnerabilities exploited to cripple the ICS. In the second part of the presentation, we will introduce the concept of Defence In Depth, why it is critical and how most Cyber Security architecture do not have Defence In Depth. In the third parts will explore a possible Defence In Depth architecture with different counter-measures such as the data diode, ICS network passive monitoring, Mobile Device management, among others.

Finally, we will look at Standards and Regulation, to propose references to go further on ICS Cyber Security.

SPEAKER: Gilles LORIDON

CEO, Global Security Network

MSc in Computer Science from French IT Engineering school, IIE, has worked as IT Consultant for more than twenty-four years and in the Cyber Security field for more than nineteen years. Gilles started his career in 1994 as a Military Engineer for the CEA, the French Nuclear Energy agency, in the Nuclear Emergency Response Team. This team is part of the first responders in case of a nuclear accident. In 1995, Gilles was designing, developing and implementing an Industrial Control System to manage the robots of the main warehouse of a leading cloth store chain. In 1997, he moved to the USA and worked for the US government as a project leader for the development of innovative Economic Intelligence System. In 1999, Gilles joined the European Leader in Economic Intelligence, CEIS, as a Project Leader and later, took the leadership of its Middle East Branch. During the last nineteen years as CEO of Global Security Network, he has been leading and implementing successful cyber security projects for governmental Agencies, Critical infrastructure companies and Military Departments in Europe, Africa, as well as in the Middle East. Gilles’ main role is to the Subject Matter Expert on ICS/SCADA Cyber Security and on the relevant standards (ISO 27001, IEC 62443, ISF IRAM) and regulations (US NRC 5.71, UAE NESA, etc…).

Gilles is certified ISA 84/IEC 61511 SIS Fundamentals Specialist and participated in many conferences in the MENA & APAC regions presenting, peer reviewed, CISC/SCADA cyber security papers. He has conducted many Information Security Awareness sessions in the Oil & Gas and the Nuclear sectors for hundreds of employees with a focus on ICS/SCADA users. Gilles has also developed and delivered Safety and Security training for the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation including the APR 1400 Safety Systems and the Safety Assessors Training.

Talk #2: Nanocomposites for the Fabrication of the Electrodes for Supercapacitors

ABSTRACT
Energy efficient and robust power devices are the keys to overcoming the challenges of daunting climate change and the depletion of the earth’s fossil fuels. As a result of an extensively diversified and globalised energy market, electrochemical capacitors, which are also known as supercapacitors, are becoming one of the vital energy-storage devices of the 21st century. This is because electrochemical capacitors, bridge the crucial performance disparity between high energy density fuel cells or batteries and high power density traditional capacitors. However, in terms of engineering related issues at the micro level, the major area urgently require attention is the development of new nanocomposites materials. Therefore this paper explores the characteristics of novel nanocomposites which combine both ion adsorptions (interfacial capacitance) and fast redox reactions (pseudo-capacitance) for energy storage.

The development of the next generation of high-energy and high-power aqueous supercapacitors is imminent in an era when power demand has peaked, and can be achieved through innovations in pseudo-capacitive nanocomposites of transition metal oxides and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This article reports on nanocomposites which demonstrate superiority in terms of three-dimensional structure and with electrical conductivity equivalent to metallic conductors arising from the CNTs which complement the high redox-active properties of the transition metal oxides. Such combined contributions, when applied in supercapacitors, lead to increased charge storage capabilities and exceptional cycling stability. Four nanocomposites, namely, CNTs/VOx, CNTs (Sn+Mn)Ox, CNTs/SnO2 and CNTs/MnO2, were synthesised. The nanocomposites have shown superior results in terms of charge-storage mechanisms, cycle life, and electrochemical kinetics. Uniquely, in this paper, CNTs/SnO2 and CNTs/VOx nanocomposite were reported as an alternative negative electrode material to the commonly used activated carbon in asymmetrical supercapacitor. Physicochemical properties of these nanocomposites were examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge.
