Driverless lorry trains.

As an engineer, how can I object to driverless vehicles?

As a driver using the M20 in Kent, how can I object to three lorries in a train? The people doing so have obviously not driven on the M20 after a shuttle or ferry has been offloaded, there are often trains of eight or ten lorries.
  • The trials are on platooning. The title could be misleading. A lead vehicle driven by a professional driver will command the platoon, the follower trucks shall be under computer control.  The official document can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/637361/truck-platooning-uk-feasibility-study.pdf

Platooning using autonomous vehicle technologies have been experimented for sometime particularly in Scandinavia, other work to note is at PATH UC Berkeley. To collect data, assess technologies, etc., is very important There is too much to learn from them. The safety case by contrast needs to be very strong, likely the identified residual risks would have solid safety procedures.

The main question is whether such trials would be sufficient? Likely not, other techniques need to be developed. An example is the Pegasus project in Germany that is addressing Autonomous Driving in motorways http://www.pegasus-projekt.info/en/about-PEGASUS.  Different validation techniques for autonomous Cyber-physical systems are being developed in order to complement field trials as part of a major EU project  http://www.enable-s3.eu/about-project/ .  Preliminary results indicate that there is much work to be done.

The challenge becomes compounded if we have learning systems: How to assure safety and functional correctness of systems that evolve all the time?  DARPA is looking into this issue a special programme has been launched into what they term Assured Autonomy that aims to create technology for continual assurance of Learning-Enabled, Cyber Physical Systems.
