Introduction - Back from Canada

Hello Folks,

My name is Antony Skinner, I have just returned from 8 years living and working in Canada, in Southern Ontario (Waterloo) about 100kms from Toronto. I was previously living in Swindon and had the pleasure of attending a few events back in the noughties.

Both in the UK and Canada I was an Industry Rep, though to be honest in Canada this was much harder as the nearest support was Toronto and that tended to be a lttle too far to travel for an evening event, especially in Winter :-)

I'm trying to get myself reintegrated into life in Britain and connect up with similar minded individuals, so will hope to see some of you at upcoming events like the Battery Powered Train, and Innovation & the startup Gen. The latter I have a little experience in, I worked for a Startup in Bristol  before I left (since bought out by Nvidia), and in the year before I returned I worked with some ex-BlackBerry colleagues to set up a couple of start-ups - one of which is becoming quite successful.

Always happy to chat about my experiences overseas and the suprisingly different culture.

Hope to meet you soon.

  • Hi Antony

One of my colleagues on the Swindon Network Committee mentioned to me that your introduction remained unanswered, and I thought that should be remedied, if somewhat belatedly.  I think your name has appeared on the attendees list for some of our local events, so I hope that you have found these useful for networking, and enjoyable/informative as well.

I retired from BAE Systems last year, swapping full time employment for part time consultancy, specialising in business modelling and analysis.  That gives me more opportunity than most to support the activities which take place during the working day, such as the IET stand at RIAT at Fairford.  I am not one of the appointed 'officers' on the committee, but I am leading a project to explore how we can help the central IET organisation to improve its engagement with SMEs in our area.

I hope that you are wholly reintegrated into British life, especially the much shorter journeys and more temperate climate.  If you would like to meet our local committee I would be happy to arrange for you to attend one of our monthly meetings, which are held between Swindon and Wootton Bassett.

    Kind regards

    Ian Martin
  • Hi Ian,

    Thanks for your kind offer.

I did attend a few events in Swindon Network last year. I moved to Gloucestershire in December so joined that network.

I have resumed my role of Professional Registration Advisor for the IET, and as I work only part-time at the moment I too have time to dedicate to this. Lets call it semi-retired until that 'perfect' role comes up.

    Regards
