IET Connect (the IET’s Benevolent Fund): what it can do for you and how you can show your support in return

Please read on: IET Connect is a brilliant organisation, well managed and provides many benefits - you or your family or a colleague might find this article unexpectedly helpful!

I am a member of the Solent LN and a Trustee of IET Connect. Many of you know that IET Connect supports IET members and their families but you may not know that their support is ever-evolving, and they are constantly looking for new ways to make a difference.

This is why IET Connect has commissioned independent research into the current and future needs of the engineering community. The research will be taking place over the coming months and the results will inform the ways IET Connect supports you now and in the future.

As a member of the IET, you and your immediate family are eligible for free lifetime support from IET Connect. Some of the support they offer includes:
  • Funding counselling for anxiety or anxiety-related depression as part of a new partnership with Anxiety UK

  • Long or short-term financial support - day-to-day costs or larger unexpected expenses

  • Support for carers - respite, home care and local support services

  • One-to-one career coaching - eg if out of work

  • Disability or health condition - help to access specialist advice, check entitled benefits, fund home adaptations & care

  • Autism support – funding National Autistic Society membership and any home adaptations or care

  • Legal advice - including on employment, consumer, family, property, wills, probate and tax

  • Debt advice

  • Retirement workshops – advice on finances and other matters (when approaching or after retirement)

IET Connect is funded through the generous donations of the engineering community but that’s not the only way you can support their work.

If you know of anyone in need of a helping hand, please tell them about the benevolent fund and encourage them to get in touch.

You could also help by telling your fellow members about IET Connect’s work and encouraging them to tick the donation box during their membership renewal, or even consider leaving a legacy to IET Connect.

If you, a family member or a colleague you know needs support, contact IET Connect on 020 7344 5498 or contactus@ietconnect.org

IET Connect always needs people to spread the word about the great work they do, so if you need any promotional materials (pens, leaflets etc), please contact the marketing team on connectmarketing@theiet.org and they will be happy to help.

If you have any general questions, you are welcome to respond here on the forum – I will be happy to help.

  • Thanks for posting this Richard.  I've needed reminding myself about the great work of IET Connect on a number of occasions - hopefully your message will be of interest to our community members; and thank you for inviting questions.

Perhaps a number of us know people who could make use of some support yet don't immediately think of what IET Connect can offer.
It's also encouraging to hear how the organisation is keen to remain relevant - it will be interesting to hear about the findings of the research you mention.

    Best regards,

    Ian
