YouTube STEM sensation Mark Rober has become the newest IET Honorary Fellow for his outstanding contribution to aerospace engineering.Mark is an American YouTuber, engineer and inventor. He is known for his YouTube videos on popular science and do-it-yourself gadgets and has over 18 million subscribers.


Before YouTube, Mark was an engineer with NASA for nine years where he worked on the Curiosity rover at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mark also worked for Apple in their Special Projects Group undertaking Product Design as Mechanical Engineer.


He recently received the IET’s STEM Personality of the Year award in a worldwide competition that celebrates an inspiring individual who is changing the narrative on what it really means to be an engineer or technologist.


On receiving Honorary Fellowship, Mark said: “It is a huge honour to be awarded a Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology. STEM is so important in improving our world and shaping our future and we need to let the next generation know just how exciting and life-changing it can be!


“I feel really lucky to have such a fantastic and fulfilling career and I’m proud to be able to use my platform and voice to inspire the engineers and technologists of tomorrow to change the world.”


On awarding his Honorary Fellowship, Professor Danielle George MBE, IET President, said: “I am absolutely delighted to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of Mark Rober with one of our highest honours during our 150th anniversary year.


“Mark has amassed an incredible following through his fun and engaging YouTube content which is all geared towards inspiring millions of people across the world, especially young people, that STEM is an exciting career and can literally change the world around us. This honour, alongside his STEM Personality of the Year award is extremely well deserved - a massive congratulations.”


Honorary Fellows are persons distinguished by their work in any engineering discipline falling within the purposes of the IET and are elected by the Board of Trustees.
