“It’s not how the data is accessed, it's what accesses the data “ Shadi A. Razak , CTO of CyNation, gave a talk on how Industry 4.0 considers supply chain activities alongside compliance.

He talked through how GDPR can strengthen your security risk profile and sometimes the simplest of security solutions are the best ones. Notably that taking security back to basics is often the best starting point for an assessment.

Whilst the concepts of CIA holds true currently, for Industry 4.0 environments, it will need to adapt as the boundaries where defence in depth models might have been applied, will need to envelope into new physical barriers i.e. cars, fridges, toys and other IoT based systems. For example for IoT devices, how can you block malicious data theft? or prevent accidental data loss ?

During the talk he described specific internet based attacks and how as the supplychain evolves so will the attacks – making it vital that security & privacy by design should be at the forefront for any system. As most recent attacks have concluded, the ‘fault’ was always within the supplychain !

Speaking with Shadi, I asked what value does Cyber Insurance play in today’s systems? He discussed that as appetite for Industry 4.0 increases so will the need for new innovative technologies – so using the correct risk models along with Cyber Insurance will help you asses your changing security posture. This was a robust talk that covered the security of Industry 4.0 IoT components and what factors need to be considered to create a secure supply chain.
