At the start of the year I chose the theme of field based technologies. In search for next year’s theme, I attended the Megatrends evening hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Amidst an extremely international crowd, technology trends were discussed by Dr Jason Blackstock, Snr. Lecturer in Science and Global Affairs at University College London and Neil Gray, Founder and CEO of Whirli.

Whilst technology trends were reviewed, of interest was the mention of 4.0 Trends. Common themes such as shared economy Vs traditional ones were talked about – where Generation X won’t be waiting for that grandfather clock, but those that will, should be looking to better manage their own perceptions of what defines reality. Technology has not only brought about newer methods of working but also the creation of new revenue streams, and with this understanding, how shared and traditional economies can give the best result for everyone involved is what will deliver the 4.0 momentum. In 2011, I researched hierachy-of-needs and how its asscociated with cyber security and it's likely that it will continue to play a critical role in the emergence of Megatrends 4.0. Queue RoboCop - the perfect cyber human sheild !

The concept of Robot Tax comes to mind i.e. what magnitudes of data would be required to create RoboCop today ? Or, similarly, whilst the deadline for disabling SSL is June 2018 for PCI DSS environments, maybe by the time Megatrends 4.0 comes about, we may have the ability to make payments using bio-lenses which will take your eye's fingerprint as its reference encryption value point, so you can simply blink thrice to authenticate a payment ( just like the TCP Handshake ) - not so far-fetched considering this smart eye lens can detect diabetes. Article 9 of GDPR has also identified biometric data as a special category too !

Similarly, their are efforts for DNA-Biohacking and Josiah Zayner's live demonstration of gene-editing injecting was mentioned. Speaking with Gil Travish, Chief Science Officer of Adaptix Imaging, who was apart of the evenings innovators network, its likely going to be some time before anyone can develop Superman-esq 3D X-rays abilities.

The trend for innovative field based devices to securely interact with the connected world is still only beginning and so its likely that next year’s theme will continue to be on field based technologies. This was a very interesting discussion on what 4.0 Megatrends can be expected in the future i.e. today.
